Communities Still Reeling from Immigration Raids and Restrictive Policies
Mississippi has felt the consequences first hand of having rigid immigration policies. One of the biggest immigration raids in U.S. history took place in 2019, when some 680 focus workers were rounded up at seven poultry plants, and many families disrupted by the resulting detentions had kids who showed up to school without parents for the first day. Project 2025 document would fuel mass deportations with serious danger for immigrant communities across the country.
Campbell’s organization has for over a decade documented how conservative Mississippi’s legislature unduly harms marginalized people. She said that many of these policies look as if they are intended to go after low income communities, minorities, women, and LGBTQ+ people, and that the motivation seems much more punitive than protective.
Public Resistance Meets Political Obstacles
But Mississippi residents have frequently resisted ultra conservative legislation, and state legislators tend to ignore public opinion. In 2011 Mississippi voters rejected a ‘personhood amendment’ that would have made fertilized eggs considered human life, meaning abortion would be illegal were it not in cases of rape or incest. Infrastructure Concerns: A Worrying Future for Public Resources
But Project 2025 could be a warning about what is to come if Mississippi’s infrastructure crisis isn’t turned around. One of America’s most underserved cities, Jackson, the state’s capital, ran out of clean water for more than a month because the state hasn’t invested. Project 2025 sought to roll back clean water protections, said Danyelle Holmes of the Poor People Campaign, and would disproportionately hurt vulnerable communities. The plan would push hazardous chemicals into reclassification, weakening public safety measures and environmental protections if it’s put in place.
Undermining Checks and Balances: Increased Presidential Authority
Project 2025 has always been ambitiously painted as an effort to centralize authority within the executive branch, reducing federal checks and balances. This centralization, the Thurgood Marshall Institute warned, could allow the president to expand his control over federal agencies and be more likely to use mandatory minimum sentences and less likely to oversee police.

Their message is clear: It is important that vigilance and progressive involvement in the community continue, so that these problems remain within the state’s borders, and do not become the national norm.
